A very important component of on-site search engine optimization is the use of your keywords in your H1 heading. Other headings are also important but for now we are just talking about the H1 heading.
H1 headings are the text written between the <h1>...</h1> tags in the html code of a web page. If you want to learn more about the use of heading tags in html see the excellent W3Schools tutorial.
In html, headings are defined with the <h1> to <h6> tags. The H1 tag signifies that this is the main heading on the page and should only be used once.
For the purposes of SEO your h1 tag should include your chosen keywords but should not consist solely of your keywords. If you are targeting a 2-4 word keyphrase try to make your heading around 5-10 words (obviously keeping the rest of the text relevant to the subject).
For your H2 to H6 tags you should also include your keywords or keyphrase but try to use a higher number of words in total. H2 to H6 headings can all be used more than once on a page and signify a decreasing level of importance the higher the number i.e a H3 heading is less important than a H2 heading.
Try and use a H2 heading as a sub heading to your H1 heading and make it around 10-15 words long.
H3-H6 headings are less important and can be used throughout the page as minor headings throughout your page content.
