I have decided to do a 10 mile run in July – the New Forest 10 – and am doing it to raise money for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
The reason for doing a run of any significant distance at all is because I decided I needed a target or goal to motivate my gym sessions.
Towards the end of last year I was running on my treadmill a couple of times a week and had got to the stage where I was running 5km in just under 25 minutes.
This wasn’t easy physically but it was harder mentally to keep running constantly for this time and not slow down to a walk.
That’s when I decided I needed something set in stone to aim for. The reason for the NF10 in particular is just down to finding an event that was more than 5km, far enough in advance to do the training and close enough to home. I was looking for a 10km but didn’t find any that met all of these criteria.
The reason for running for JDRF is simple. I am a diabetic myself so it just made sense to run for this cause and help towards finding a cure and make the lives of the young people that suffer from this condition better.
I have a 12 week training plan and yesterday was the first day of the second week which didn’t get off to a good start because I somehow managed to hurt my knew and had to stop running after 25 minutes. It’s much better today (which is a rest day anyway) but still not right. Hopefully it will be better by tomorrow so I can resume training as planned.
